Chelsea Power Station

Was a disused coal and later oil-fired and later gas-fired power station on The River Thames at Lots Road in Chelsea, London in the south-west of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, which supplied electricity to the London Underground system. It is sometimes erroneously referred to as Fulham Power Station, a name properly applied to another former station a mile south-west along the Tideway.

Client: JRL Group (Midgard) | Project Value: £75 million | Role: Site Management & Project Management | Duration: January 2021 – March 2022

This project was one of the more challenging sites that some of the Whites Construction Management team has been a part of. There were several external trades involved from the usual consultants to local conservationists. Even though the power station was not a grade 2 listed building, the scope was to modernise whilst remaining in -keeping with the surroundings and original look as the power station is a prominent feature on the harbour. The entire project is comprised of two glass residential towers of 37 and 25 storeys.

The works carried out by our team included the management of two sectors of project’s brickwork package. They appointed the subcontractors for all associated works and managed these through to the completion. This project was very complex due to the external demolition and façade installation within the arches on the river side and main road. Most of the drawings and designs were only preliminary which meant when it came to the fit-out internally and externally there were numerous design changes. It is safe to say that the project looks stunning and has a striking look at the harbour.
